Obituary for Merry E. Drake

Merry E. Drake, of Hartford, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at the age of 96 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. A small private family memorial is planned later this summer in Minneapolis, MN.
Merry was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN., the daughter of Alice and Alexander Hoyt. After marrying Robert M. Drake, a Naval physician, in 1948, they lived in several different places around the country. She loved being a mother to her three children: Miller (Linda) Drake of Los Angeles; Alixe (David) Bielot of Rubicon, WI; and Martha (Michael) Laliberte of Craig, CO. She dearly loved her two grandchildren, Samantha Drake of Los Angeles, CA and Paul-Robert Laliberte of New York, NY. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Elizabeth, her brother John and her first husband Dale Eckblad, a WWII naval air pilot. She pursued her education in Religious Thought at the University of Pennsylvania and was a long time active member of the Unitarian Church in Cherry Hill, N.J. where she was church secretary for many years.
Merry absolutely loved all animals but especially dogs. Her dogs, Wiggy, and Airedales Prince and Clyde were very important to her and brought her great comfort and enjoyment over the years. She always said “I prefer dogs to humans”! She operated a pet sitting business in Oconomowoc for over 10 years.
If so desired, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org or the Washington County Humane Society at www.wchspets.org . Many thanks to the staff at Wellington Place at Hartford for all the care and kindness given to Merry over the past three years and to Season’s Hospice for their wonderful care and support of Merry over the past four months.
