Obituary for Jane A. Barnum

Jane Barnum of Hartford passed away on January 29, 2018 at the Morningside Health Center in Sheboygan, WI. She was 93 years old.

She was born in Neosho, WI on July 29, 1924 to Emma (nee Christenson) and Charles Zimdars. Jane married Vern Barnum at St. Olaf’s Church in Toland, WI on July 7, 1951.

Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hartford was Jane’s church for over 60 years. She was active in the alter guild, sewed by hand all their baptismal napkins, and was known for her delicious home baked cookies and hostess duties at the annual cookie fair.

Jane was a personal secretary to the president of Hartford’s Kraft foods for 10 years and then managed the secretarial duties for her husband’s New York Life insurance business. Volunteering kept Jane busy for many years. She was a Pink Lady at the hospital, delivered Meals on Wheels, and worked at the election polls. Later in her life, Jane worked as a substitute aide and secretary in all four of Hartford’s schools. She is still remembered by many Hartford students as playing Mother Goose in her daughter’s first grade classroom.

She was an accomplished cook and seamstress and also enjoyed traveling in the U.S. as well as out of the country. Playing cards, especially bridge with her dear friends of over 60 years, gave her much happiness! Dancing and music were also passions of Jane’s, even in the last days of her life.

Jane is survived by her loving family: children Sue (Mark) Konrath and Brenda (Steve Press) Barnum, her grandchildren Luke (Andrea) and Jake (Kelly), and her great grandchildren Jordan, Austin, Lauren,
Jaden, Carter, Emma, and Lily Jane. She is further survived by special nieces, Bonnie Steel, Sara (Larry) and nephew Craig ( Maxine) as well as her sisters in-law Hazel, Dorothy, and Vi and brother-in-law, Conrad, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. Jane had a special knack for connecting with people and will be greatly missed.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Vern, and sister, Eleanor.

Honoring Jane’s wishes, a private memorial service for immediate family will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Jon Breimeier officiating.

Inurnment at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hartford.

Memorials to Redeemer Lutheran Church or Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin would be appreciated.

Jane’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Morningside Health Center and Sharon Richardson Hospice who took very special care of her.
