Obituary for Grace M. Nordlund

Grace Marie Nordlund, 89, died Sunday at The Wellington Place at Hartford, in Hartford, Wis.
Born Jan. 3, 1928, in Chicago, to Andrew and Clara Krewoy, she grew up in Chicago with her younger sister Lenore. She wed Roy Nordlund in 1948, and they remained married until his death in 1999.
They were among the first families to move to Rolling Meadows, arriving there in March 1954, a year before the city officially incorporated. She served as secretary to the city’s first church, The Community Church of Rolling Meadows, which famously held its earliest services in a barn.
An independent-minded person, she had a wide variety of interests. She played the organ and accordion, painted, crocheted, created ceramic art pieces, taught herself computer programming, read voraciously and once investigated purchasing the oldest newspaper in Washington State. Constantly employed, she eventually bought and operated the A-OK Letter Service in Palatine during the 1970s.
She will be best known by those whose lives she touched for her offbeat ideas and total disregard for others’ opinions of them. She once brought a monkey home to live with the family, an experiment that produced a considerable mess, many good stories and lasted six months until she admitted a monkey in the house wasn’t the best idea.
Her photograph appeared on the front page of the Chicago Tribune in 1945 after she stood in line overnight to attend one of the Cubs’ World Series games at Wrigley Field. She wasn’t a baseball fan. She had a crush on the Cubs’ center fielder.
The family moved to Lake Shangrila, Wis., in 1978. Following Roy’s death, she moved to Hartford, Wis., in 2006.
She is survived by: her sister, Lenore Galvin; her children, Jeff (Lisa) Nordlund, Cynthia (Craig) Prisching, Scott (Linda) Nordlund and Melissa (John) Wojszko; three grandchildren, Tressa (Jon) Luttrell, Todd Prisching, Kari (Cole) Breese; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Kennedy and Addyson Breese; and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 6, 2018, at Shimon Funeral Home in Hartford, Wis., with visitation from 11 to 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Washington County Humane Society (3650 State Road 60 Slinger, WI 53086) or to Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care (c/o Seasons Hospice Foundation 8537 Solution Center Chicago, IL 60677).
