Jessie M. Blodgett, age 19, of Hartford, passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 15, 2013.  Jessie was the cherished daughter of Buck and Joy Blodgett.

She graduated Hartford Union High School in 2012, and attended UWM in 2013. Jessie had just accepted a distinguished Talent Scholarship from the School of Music Education, as well as a campus job mentoring disadvantaged inner city university students.  She was extremely proud of her new business; teaching 28 young Hartford students voice, piano, and violin lessons.  She also volunteered every summer at the Central Middle School Orchestra summer program.  Jessie was a fierce advocate for male against female violence, social justice, sustainable living, and environmentalism.  Recently, Jessie played the fiddler with the Hartford Players in Fiddler on the Roof. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, fellow students and all who knew her.

A Memorial Service for Jessie will be held Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the Shimon Funeral Home (824 Union Street, Hartford), with Pastor Ben Stratton officiating. Pastor Ben will give all a chance to share their memories of Jessie.  Visitation for family and friends will precede the service, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Donations to the family will go either to a Central Middle School Orchestra Scholarship in Jessie’s name, or to a charity to be determined that fights male violence against women, a cause that Jessie fought passionately for.

My heart breaks for you during this very difficult time. Jessie was truly a remarkable person and an absolute joy to have in class (AP literature). She led with poise during class discussions and provided fodder for provocative discussions. She supported my feminist views in class and was often my ally in discussions. Deeply philosophical, she would stay after class or join me for lunch to continue discussing literature, philosophy, and religion. She was an old soul in a teenager's body. She touched my life, as she did with many others, due to her warm and caring demeanor. The world was richer because of her effervescent personality, and she will be missed. Sheila Parker

Dear Joy and Buck, My heart breaks for you during this difficult time. No words can express the shock and sadness of this tragedy. Never did I expect that the 19 year old found dead would be Jessie. I still remember bringing Ben over, sometime in middle school and you took Jessie and him to a movie. Jessie was such a light in this world. So talented, so inspiring, and always had a smile on her face and always trying something new. Our prayers are with you and Buck and your family. Love, Christine, Ben, Kevin, & Nick Hartwig

Mr. and Mrs. Blodgett, We echo all the wonderful sentiments about Jessie that have been shared here. Jessie was a good friend to Hannah and graciously included her in her yoga group in West Bend, even going so far as driving Hannah there because she didn't have her license. Hannah was honored to be a back-up singer as Jessie shared her musical prowess at the HUHS Talent Show. The too few times Jessie graced us with her presence, she lit up our home. We are praying for you. The Kangas Family - Mike, Beth, Sarah, John and Hannah

Joy and Buck, I just saw Jessie's advertisement in the paper for the variety of music lessons she was offering this summer. When I saw this ad it made me smile. I also heard about the musical and how talented she is. I was so pleased but not a bit surprised at the amazing young woman she has become. Even though I have not seen or talked to Jessie in years, I was one of her teachers at Sycamore Tree. She was a very intelligent and so so sweet! It always makes my heart so happy to see and hear of my past student accomplishments and success. My heart aches for the both of you and anyone who has ever met Jessie. This is just devastating and hard to comprehend. I pray for God's peace and strength. Ms. Tracy

My prayers are with your family during this impossible time. Jessie was such an amazing young lady. I am proud that I got to teach her. My fondest memory of Jessie is when she was in the 8th grade talent show and about midway through we renamed the show Blodgettscope because her performances were amazing. After that she gave me a CD of some of her songs. Last year during summer school I piped her songs in to the auditorium sound system. She was both proud and embarrased at the same time. All the 6th graders thought she was amazing. I will truly miss her. Joseph Navarre Central Middle School

Jessie told me last week Friday after playing Pachelbel Canon in D with myself and Lauren Masarik, "Mr. H., my violin has not been on fire like that in a long time. I felt physically and emotionally charged playing that today. That was amazing." I will always remember Jessie with the Canon in D, all the summers she came to volunteer at CMS Summer School, her three wonderful years in the CMS orchestra program, her trip in 2007 to Washington DC with the orchestra program and all the musicals that she volunteered in to play in the pit orchestra. Jessie was a very talented young lady that many, including myself looked up to. I miss her sooooo much already. Jessie's spirit will live, and continue to live in all those she touched through music. Dear Buck and Joy, Jessie was a friend of our son Michael at UWM. They were both in the music program and shared an honors class. We had the pleasure of meeting Jessie once at our home. She was so warm and full of smiles! That night, she filled our home with song as she sang away! What a delight! With everything that Michael has shared, it is clear that Jessie was such a blessing to this world and to her friends! It was our honor to have met her. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies for your great loss. You and your family are in our prayers. - Mary and Rick Frank

Dr Buck, I am so sorry to hear about Jessie. My heart is breaking for you and Joy. We talked about our Jessie's when I first came to work for you. It was fun exchanging stories. She sounds like a wonderful blessing by all of the wonderful messages left on this site. I know God is with you at this time, please take advantage of His love for you and let Him help you through this. With my deepest respect and love, Mari Barker

I have never met your wonderful daughter but hearing so many great things about her will help me be the best i can be in others' lives as i try to make new friends and learn piano, living for each important day. As a theater performer myself, it is evident that all other actors are like family to you, and the way she has touched lives of those who haven't even met her is a beautiful continuation of her example and purpose.

My 7th grade daughter knew Jessie from her helping in orchestra, and thinks the world of her. I've never seen your daughter in person, but in her photos, she absolutely shines. She was radiant. And today I listened to her singing and was overwhelmed. What a soulful and honest voice. Her beauty is deep and endless. May you find peace, Dani Kuepper

Dear Dr Joy, I just heard about Jessie and am at a loss for words to express my sympathy. We spoke together so much about our girls, that I felt like I knew Jessie. I wish I could take some of this incredible saddness from you. You and Buck are in my constant thoughts and prayers. -Linda Jelleyman

My heart is broken to hear of this terrible news. Please know that I have had you both in my thoughts and prayers since I first heard. May your memories be of comfort to you and may you somehow, some way find peace to carry you through the days ahead.
